Why Is Tree Preservation Important?

Mature trees provide shade, beauty, environmental benefits, and long-term value to residential and commercial properties. However, construction activities and landscape changes can seriously affect a tree’s root system, soil conditions, and structural stability.
Heavy machinery, soil compaction, excavation, grading, and changes in drainage can damage roots even when the visible parts of a tree appear healthy. Some construction-related problems may not become noticeable until months or years later.
Professional tree preservation planning helps identify potential risks and supports better decisions before work begins.

Our approach focuses on:

Preserving an existing mature tree can often be more beneficial than removing it and starting over with a newly planted tree.

When Do You Need Tree Preservation Services?

Tree preservation planning may be helpful whenever construction, excavation, or major property changes take place near established trees.

Planning Residential Construction

Building an addition, remodeling your home, installing a garage, or changing your property layout can affect nearby trees and their root systems. Early planning helps identify potential risks before construction begins.

Developing Commercial Property

Commercial construction and large-scale development can involve heavy equipment, grading, utility installation, and significant changes to the surrounding soil. Tree protection planning can help reduce unnecessary damage to valuable trees.

Installing Driveways or Hardscaping

Driveways, patios, walkways, retaining walls, and other hardscape projects may require excavation or changes to soil levels. These activities can affect roots and soil conditions around mature trees.

Performing Excavation or Utility Work

Trenching, underground utility installation, and excavation near trees can damage important structural and absorbing roots. A professional assessment can help identify areas that require additional care.

Protecting Valuable Mature Trees

Large, established trees may have significant landscape, shade, and property value. Tree preservation planning can help property owners make informed decisions about protecting these trees during property improvements.

Our Tree Preservation Services

Arborman Tree Care offers tree preservation solutions designed to address common risks associated with construction, soil disturbance, and changes to the surrounding landscape.

Construction Tree Protection

Construction work can expose trees to root damage, soil compaction, bark injuries, and changes in water availability. We help identify potential hazards and recommend tree protection measures appropriate to the project.

Possible considerations include:
The appropriate protection strategy depends on the tree, site conditions, construction plans, and potential level of disturbance.

Critical Root Zone Protection

A tree’s root system extends beyond the area directly beneath its trunk. Construction activities within or near the critical root zone can affect the tree’s ability to absorb water and nutrients and maintain structural stability.
Our assessment may consider:
Protecting the root zone early can help reduce avoidable damage and support the tree’s long-term health.

Tree Protection Zones

A Tree Protection Zone, or TPZ, is an area established to reduce disturbance around a tree during construction or other site work.
Depending on the project, tree protection recommendations may include:
Tree protection zones should be determined according to the specific site, tree condition, construction plan, and applicable professional guidance.

Soil Compaction Assessment

Heavy equipment, repeated foot traffic, and stored construction materials can compact soil around trees. Compacted soil may limit air and water movement and make it more difficult for roots to function properly.
Potential considerations include:
The appropriate protection strategy depends on the tree, site conditions, construction plans, and potential level of disturbance.

Tree Preservation Before Construction

The best time to consider tree preservation is before construction or excavation begins. Early planning allows property owners, contractors, and project teams to identify potential risks and consider tree protection measures before heavy equipment enters the site.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is tree preservation?

Tree preservation involves planning and practices designed to protect existing trees during construction, excavation, landscaping, and other property changes. It may include root-zone protection, soil assessment, tree protection zones, and professional recommendations.
Construction can damage tree roots, compact soil, injure trunks, and change drainage patterns. These problems may affect tree health and stability, sometimes without immediately visible symptoms. Planning ahead can help reduce avoidable damage.
A Tree Protection Zone is a designated area around a tree intended to reduce disturbance during construction. Its size and requirements depend on the tree, site conditions, construction activity, and applicable professional recommendations.
Yes. Excavation, grading, trenching, heavy equipment, and soil compaction can damage roots or change the conditions roots need to function properly. A professional assessment can help identify potential risks.
Root collar excavation is a process used to investigate or expose the area where a tree’s trunk connects to its roots. It may be appropriate when the root flare is buried or when further assessment is required.
Air spading may help professionals investigate soil and root conditions in suitable situations while reducing mechanical disturbance. Its suitability depends on the tree, soil, project goals, and site conditions.
It is best to seek guidance before construction, excavation, grading, or major landscaping begins near established trees. Early planning provides more opportunities to identify risks and consider protection measures.

They trimmed and cleaned up 2 large Ash trees in my backyard. They managed to get the lift through the gate and to both trees without damaging my fence or lawn. They cleaned up the debris. Very professional and knowledgeable!

Had a 10 year old plum tree at a rental property that needed to go due to disease. They came, quoted fair price, said there was a crew in the area and they could get to it later today. Job done. Cut nicely to the ground. Treated stump and cleaned up. Why can't all companies make it this easy?? I will certainly give you a call again for my tree removal/care needs. Thanks again for being so prompt, direct, and cost effective.

I have had several different companies come out and claim to be arborists. Arborman Tree Care is the ONLY company that has convinced me that they truly know what they are doing. I am a repeat customer and fully intend to call them every 2 years for tree maintenance. They came out this year to prune two trees, remove an elderberry, and prune down five out-of-control bushes that had been neglected by yours truly. Every single person I dealt with (Allison, Joe, Jerome, Jessica and Bill) were very kind and friendly. They really know what they are doing and are worth every penny!

We had a large tree limb fall in our backyard after a major storm and reached out to Arborman Tree Care. Jessica came out the same day and was excellent, she was very professional, knowledgeable, and thorough. She explained the serious condition of the tree (even joked we should buy a lottery ticket because the whole thing could have come down) and provided a clear quote for removing both the damaged maple and a pear tree. She said her crew would follow up quickly, which was reassuring during the storm chaos. Unfortunately, the scheduling and communication after that fell short. We were told the crew would come out on the date we were scheduled but it turned into multiple weeks of delays. Allison was friendly but repeatedly forgot to add us to the schedule (mentioned a sticky note with our name on it) and there were several mix ups, including showing up for the wrong tree at one point and having to stop work due to insufficient crew. We were understanding and flexible, even adjusting our travel plans. On the final scheduled day it rained, which I would have understood why the crew wouldn’t show. I’m sure it’s dangerous to do that in the rain. However, we never received a courtesy call or update. I really had high hopes for this company. Especially, with the great reviews I read and the experience we had with Jessica. Maybe this was just a fluke due to the storm and overwhelming calls. They had every right to tell me “hey can we schedule you out a bit because we’re overwhelmed with calls due to the storm”. Again, it would have been fine with me. I was super understanding the entire time, never got upset or anything. I was just trying to get on the schedule for whenever.

They came during one of those massive wind storms and cut my large maple tree back before it split in 3 places and would do damage to home and gazebo. Thank you
