WHAT TO DO RIGHT AFTER A STORM DAMAGES YOUR TREE

A storm-damaged tree is unstable in ways you cannot see from the ground. Work through these steps in order before you do anything else.

1. Get everyone clear

Keep people and pets away from the tree, hanging limbs, and anything the tree is touching. Call 911 for injuries, fire, or anyone trapped.

2. Treat every sagging or downed line as live

Stay far back and call your power utility. Do not touch a tree that is in contact with a line, and do not let anyone cut it. Utility crews have to clear the line first.

3. Check for gas

If a tree has hit your house and you smell gas, leave right away and call 911 and your gas utility from outside.

4. Stay out from under hanging limbs

A limb caught in the canopy can drop with no warning, and a bent or split trunk can spring back when it is cut.

5. Take photos from a safe distance

Capture the tree, the damage, and the surroundings before anything is moved. You will want them for your insurance claim.

6. Call us

We make the site safe first, then clear the damage.

Why you should not cut it yourself

Storm-loaded wood is under tension. A limb that looks easy to cut can kick back, roll or drop the whole hung-up section on the person holding the saw. This is how homeowners get hurt, and it is the work our crews are trained and equipped for.
Call 208.286.6875 and tell us what you see, and we will tell you what to do next.

WHEN STORM DAMAGE IS AN EMERGENCY AND WHEN IT CAN WAIT

Not every storm-damaged tree needs a crew tonight. Here is how we sort the calls.

Call now, any hour

Call within a day or two

If a tree is touching a power line, call your utility first and then call us. For full emergency removals, see our emergency tree removal page. We will tell you straight when a situation can wait, even when it means we do not get the job. Send a few photos and we will tell you which list your tree is on.

WHAT STORMS DO TO TREES IN BOISE AND THE TREASURE VALLEY

Wind events

Strong gusts snap brittle limbs on Siberian elm and cottonwood and can rock shallow-rooted trees loose. A tree that leans more after a windstorm than before it needs a look right away.

Wet snow

Heavy, wet snow loads bend and split limbs, and weak unions give way first. Broken and hung-up limbs are the most common wind and snow damage repair call we get.

The Boise River corridor

Cottonwoods along the river grow fast and carry weak wood. Large limbs drop in wind, so the trees that look healthiest from the street can still be the most dangerous overhead.

Older neighborhoods

The oldest and largest trees in the city stand in the North End, the East End, Hyde Park and the Boise Bench. Most of our technical storm work happens there.

Tree Pollarding

Pollarding is a planned, repeating cut that holds a tree at a set height and form. It suits certain species and fails on others. The full explanation is in the next section, including which trees qualify and which do not. Tell us which of these you need, or describe what you are seeing, and we will quote the right scope.

STORM DAMAGE TREE SERVICES ACROSS THE TREASURE VALLEY

Emergency Storm Tree Removal In Boise

Trees that have already failed, or are about to, come down fast and safely. We make the site safe first, then handle the full removal on a scheduled return if that is the smarter order. See our emergency tree service page for 24/7 removals.

Hanging Limb And Broken Branch Removal

Broken, hung-up and cracked limbs are the most common wind damage repair call in Boise. We climb and cut them out cleanly, back to the branch collar, so the wound can heal.

Tree On A House, Roof Or Fence

When a tree is on a structure, the order of cuts decides whether the damage gets worse. We plan the rigging before the saw starts, and we lower each section under control or lift it clear by crane so the load never rests on your roof.

Split Trunk And Failed Union Assessment

A split trunk or a torn union can look minor and still fail within days. An ISA Certified Arborist inspects the break and tells you whether the tree can be cabled and kept or has to come down.

Hazard Tree Assessment In The Treasure Valley

Storms expose weak trees, and a calm day is the time to find them. We inspect for decay, cavities, cracks and root problems, and we give you a written report. See the hazard tree assessment section below.

Storm Damage Restoration And Cleanup In Boise

After the dangerous wood is down, we clean up the tree that remains: clean cuts on torn limbs, removal of splintered stubs, and a pruning plan that helps the canopy recover. Brush is chipped and hauled away.

Storm Preparation Pruning

The cheapest storm damage is the damage that never happens. Removing dead wood and fixing weak unions before storm season lowers the odds that a limb falls. See our deadwooding and pollarding page, and ask us about cabling for trees worth saving.

The Trees Storms Damage Most Often in Boise and the Treasure Valley

Wind and wet snow find the weak point in a tree, and each species has a different one. These six make up most of our storm damage calls around Boise.

Tree How Storms Damage It What We Do
Siberian Elm Brittle wood sheds large limbs in wind with no warning. Older Boise neighborhoods carry many of these trees. Remove broken and hung-up limbs, then assess the rest of the canopy.
Cottonwood Fast growth makes weak wood, and large limbs drop in wind, especially along the Boise River corridor. Rig and lower heavy limbs, and judge whether the tree is safe to keep.
Silver Maple Included bark at co-dominant unions can split under wind or snow load, and the failure is usually the loss of the entire leader. Remove the failed leader and check the remaining unions.
Green Ash Aging, declining street-tree cohorts shed limbs and fail at weak points. Clean out damage and assess whether the tree is worth saving.
Lombardy Poplar Short-lived and canker-prone, so storms break trees that were already failing inside. Remove broken wood, and recommend removal when the tree is spent.
Blue Spruce Heavy wet snow breaks branches and can split or bend the top. Remove broken branches and check the leader and trunk.

CAN A STORM-DAMAGED TREE BE SAVED?

Many storm-damaged trees recover with proper cuts. Some should not be kept at all. Here is how we sort them.

Often worth saving

Likely needs removal

If your tree lands on the second list, we will tell you straight, even when it means removal is the only safe answer. Send a few photos and we will tell you which list your tree belongs on.

AFTER A STORM IN BOISE: THE CITY, THE UTILITY OR YOU

Before you pay anyone, work out who owns the problem. In Boise, three parties can be responsible, and the right call saves time and money.

The city handles street trees in the public right-of-way

Street trees in the planting strip between the sidewalk and curb fall under the Boise Tree Ordinance. Call Boise Community Forestry about a damaged street tree, and do not cut it on your own.

The utility handles trees on power lines

If a tree is touching a line, or a line is down, call your power utility first. Crews cannot work near an energized line until the utility has cleared it.

You handle trees on private property

Anything inside your property line is yours to maintain and remove. That is most of the storm damage we repair. Boundary trees shared with a neighbor and some subdivisions or HOAs carry extra rules, and we walk through those during the assessment.

Callout bar: Not sure which one you have? Send us a photo showing the tree and where it sits relative to the sidewalk. We will tell you whether to call us or the city. No charge either way.

TREE STORM DAMAGE REPAIR FAQS

What counts as a tree emergency after a storm?

A tree or limb on a house, car or driveway, a hanging limb over a door or walkway, a trunk that split, roots that lifted, or a fallen tree blocking an exit. If anyone is in danger, call 911 first.

We answer calls 24/7 and take the most dangerous jobs first: trees on structures, and hanging limbs over doors and walkways. Response time depends on the storm and the number of calls.

Get everyone out of the damaged area, check for gas and downed lines, and call 911 if anyone is hurt. Take photos from a safe distance, then call us. We make the site safe first and plan the removal so the damage does not get worse.

Stay far back, keep everyone away, and call your power utility. Do not touch the tree and do not let anyone cut it. We can handle the tree once the utility clears the line.

It depends on your policy. Many policies cover removal when a tree damages a covered structure, and coverage for a tree that falls without hitting anything is often limited. Call your insurer, and we will provide photos and a written scope for your claim.

Price depends on the size of the tree, how much of it is down, whether it is on a structure, and access. After-hours calls cost more. Send photos for a free written estimate.

Often, yes. Trees with damage limited to a few limbs and a sound trunk usually recover with clean cuts. A split trunk, a lifted root plate, or a lean that changed after the storm usually means removal. We tell you which one you have.

It depends on the facts, and the answer is often tied to whether the tree was visibly unhealthy before the storm. Start with your insurer, and ask an attorney if the situation is disputed. We can document the tree and the damage for you.

Trees on your private property generally do not need a permit for emergency work. Street trees in the public right-of-way are managed by the city, and some subdivisions or HOAs have their own rules. Confirm with Boise Community Forestry before work on a street tree.

Yes. An ISA Certified Arborist inspects the tree for decay, cracks, root problems and targets, and tells you whether to keep, prune, cable or remove it.

Brush is chipped and hauled away the same day. Larger wood can be cut to length and left for firewood if you want it.

Call 208.286.6875 or send photos, and we will answer any questions you may have.

They trimmed and cleaned up 2 large Ash trees in my backyard. They managed to get the lift through the gate and to both trees without damaging my fence or lawn. They cleaned up the debris. Very professional and knowledgeable!

Had a 10 year old plum tree at a rental property that needed to go due to disease. They came, quoted fair price, said there was a crew in the area and they could get to it later today. Job done. Cut nicely to the ground. Treated stump and cleaned up. Why can't all companies make it this easy?? I will certainly give you a call again for my tree removal/care needs. Thanks again for being so prompt, direct, and cost effective.

I have had several different companies come out and claim to be arborists. Arborman Tree Care is the ONLY company that has convinced me that they truly know what they are doing. I am a repeat customer and fully intend to call them every 2 years for tree maintenance. They came out this year to prune two trees, remove an elderberry, and prune down five out-of-control bushes that had been neglected by yours truly. Every single person I dealt with (Allison, Joe, Jerome, Jessica and Bill) were very kind and friendly. They really know what they are doing and are worth every penny!

We had a large tree limb fall in our backyard after a major storm and reached out to Arborman Tree Care. Jessica came out the same day and was excellent, she was very professional, knowledgeable, and thorough. She explained the serious condition of the tree (even joked we should buy a lottery ticket because the whole thing could have come down) and provided a clear quote for removing both the damaged maple and a pear tree. She said her crew would follow up quickly, which was reassuring during the storm chaos. Unfortunately, the scheduling and communication after that fell short. We were told the crew would come out on the date we were scheduled but it turned into multiple weeks of delays. Allison was friendly but repeatedly forgot to add us to the schedule (mentioned a sticky note with our name on it) and there were several mix ups, including showing up for the wrong tree at one point and having to stop work due to insufficient crew. We were understanding and flexible, even adjusting our travel plans. On the final scheduled day it rained, which I would have understood why the crew wouldn’t show. I’m sure it’s dangerous to do that in the rain. However, we never received a courtesy call or update. I really had high hopes for this company. Especially, with the great reviews I read and the experience we had with Jessica. Maybe this was just a fluke due to the storm and overwhelming calls. They had every right to tell me “hey can we schedule you out a bit because we’re overwhelmed with calls due to the storm”. Again, it would have been fine with me. I was super understanding the entire time, never got upset or anything. I was just trying to get on the schedule for whenever.

They came during one of those massive wind storms and cut my large maple tree back before it split in 3 places and would do damage to home and gazebo. Thank you
