WHAT IS TREE CABLING AND BRACING?

Tree cabling and bracing are support systems that hold weak parts of a tree together. Cabling uses steel cable in the upper canopy to limit how far limbs can move. Bracing uses steel rods through the wood to hold a split or weak union closed. Both give a structurally flawed tree extra support, so you can keep a tree that would otherwise be a risk.

Cabling vs Bracing

Comparison Cabling Bracing
What it is Steel cable fixed between limbs in the upper canopy. Threaded steel rods run through a split or weak union.
What it does Limits movement and shares load between limbs. Helps hold a crack or weak fork closed.
Used for Co-dominant stems, heavy limbs, and multi-stem trees. Cracks, splits, and tight V-shaped unions.
Where it goes Roughly two-thirds of the way up the limbs from the union. Through the trunk or union at the weak point.
Often paired with Structural pruning to reduce limb weight. Cabling above the brace for additional support, where appropriate.

How supplemental support works: Cables are generally installed above a weak union, while brace rods are installed through or near the union, as appropriate to the tree's structural condition. Structural pruning can help reduce limb weight and stress on the support system. Installation should follow applicable industry standards and the recommendations of a qualified arborist.

WHEN CABLING AND BRACING IS THE RIGHT CALL AND WHEN IT ISN'T

Not every weak tree needs hardware. Here is how we sort the calls.

Cabling or bracing may help

Pruning may be enough

Removal may be the honest answer

If your tree lands on the third list, we will tell you straight, even when it means we do not get the job. Send a few photos of the fork or the limb, and we will tell you which list your tree belongs on.

THE TREES WE CABLE AND BRACE MOST OFTEN IN THE TREASURE VALLEY

Each species fails in its own way, so each one calls for a different decision. These six cover most of our support system work around Boise.

Tree Support: Common Tree Problems and Solutions

Tree The Problem We See What We Do
Silver Maple Included bark at co-dominant unions can split under wind or snow load, and the failure is often the loss of the entire leader. Cable the union, reduce limb weight, and brace any crack where appropriate.
Siberian Elm Brittle wood and multiple leaders can shed large limbs in high winds. Cable sound leaders and remove weak wood where appropriate.
Cottonwood Large, heavy limbs on weak wood. Cabling can help, but the wood itself limits what hardware can safely hold. Assess the wood first, then cable or recommend removal if necessary.
Green Ash Aging street trees with declining crowns and weak unions. Cable only if the tree is healthy enough to benefit from supplemental support.
Lombardy Poplar Short-lived and canker-prone, so a support system cannot fix the underlying problem. Usually recommend removal rather than installing support hardware.
Apple and Pear Heavy fruit loads can stress long, fruiting limbs. Cable heavy limbs when the tree is worth keeping. See our fruit tree pruning page .

TREE CABLING AND BRACING SERVICES IN BOISE

Tree Cabling Installation

An ISA Certified Arborist climbs the tree and picks the attachment points. We install flexible extra-high-strength steel cable, attached to bolts set in the upper crown, between the limbs that need support. The cable limits movement and moves load from a weak union to a stronger one.

Tree Bracing For Splits And Weak Unions

When a union has cracked or a fork is tight and weak, we run threaded steel rods through the wood to hold it closed. We assess the crack first, and we only brace a union that has sound wood around it.

Dynamic Cabling With Synthetic Rope

For trees that need support with less impact on the wood, dynamic cabling uses synthetic rope attached to the tree without invasive drilling. It lets limbs move and still limits failure, and it works where hardware cannot be installed.

Structural Pruning With Cabling

Support works best on a tree that has been pruned for weight and shape. We pair cabling with structural pruning, so the load on the hardware is as small as it can be.

Inspection And Maintenance Of Existing Systems

Cables and braces need checking. Extension guidance calls for a ground check every year and a climbing inspection about every three years, and many systems are replaced after 7 to 10 years. We inspect systems installed years ago, adjust or replace worn hardware, and remove cables the tree has outgrown.

Storm Damage Support

A union that split in a storm may be saved with the right support. We inspect it, and we cable or brace it when the wood is sound. See our storm damage repair page.

Tree Support System Assessment

Not sure whether you need a support system? An ISA Certified Arborist inspects the tree and tells you whether to cable, prune, or remove it. See our consulting arborist services page.

Tell us which of these you need, or describe what you are seeing, and we will quote the right scope.

Who pays for tree Cabling & bracing in Boise: the city or you

Before you hire anyone to cable a tree, work out whose tree it is. In Boise, that answer decides who can touch it.

The city handles trees in the public right-of-way

Street trees in the planting strip between sidewalk and curb fall under the Boise Tree Ordinance. Pruning or supporting them generally goes through Boise Community Forestry. Do not install hardware on a street tree on your own.

You handle trees on private property

Anything inside your property line is yours to maintain. That covers most of the cabling and bracing we do. Boundary trees shared with a neighbor and some subdivisions or HOAs carry extra rules, and we walk through those at the assessment.

Not sure which one you have? Send us a photo showing the tree and where it sits relative to the sidewalk. We will tell you whether to call us or the city. No charge either way.

TREE CABLING AND BRACING FAQS

What is tree cabling and bracing?

Cabling uses steel cable in the upper canopy to limit limb movement and share load. Bracing uses threaded steel rods through a split or weak union to hold it closed. Together they are called tree support systems, and they help keep a structurally weak tree standing.
Cabling connects limbs high in the canopy and limits how far they move. Bracing goes through the wood at a crack or tight fork and holds it together. Many trees get both: a brace at the weak union and a cable above it as backup.
Tree bracing uses threaded steel rods through a split or weak union to hold the stems together. It is used when two stems grow from one point with included bark between them, or when a union has already cracked. Often it is paired with a cable above the brace.
Yes. We install tree bracing and cabling in Boise, Meridian and Eagle. Send a photo of the fork or the crack, and we will tell you whether a brace fits.
You may if a tree has a weak fork, a heavy limb over your house, or a union that cracked in a storm. We offer tree cabling and bracing in Boise, Meridian and Eagle. Send photos, and we will tell you if support fits.
How much does tree cabling cost in Boise? Price depends on the size of the tree, the number of cables or braces, the height, and access. See the price table above, and send photos for a free written estimate.
Static cabling and bracing both involve drilling through the wood, and every hole is a wound. A good arborist weighs that cost against the risk of failure before recommending a system. Dynamic cabling attaches synthetic rope without invasive drilling, and it is less damaging where it fits.
Many systems are replaced after about 7 to 10 years, according to Extension guidance. They need a ground check each year and an arborist inspection about every three years, and hardware gets adjusted or replaced as the tree grows.
No. Cabling lowers the risk of a limb or union failing, but it does not remove it. A tree with decay, a hollow trunk, or failing roots needs a different answer, and we will tell you which one applies.
Sometimes. A union that cracked but has sound wood around it may be saved with a brace and a cable. A tree with a deep split, a lifted root plate or a changed lean usually needs removal. See our storm damage repair page.
Many mature trees with weak unions or heavy limbs, including silver maple, Siberian elm and some fruit trees. Trees with severe decay or a short natural life, like Lombardy poplar, are usually poor candidates.

Had a 10 year old plum tree at a rental property that needed to go due to disease. They came, quoted fair price, said there was a crew in the area and they could get to it later today. Job done. Cut nicely to the ground. Treated stump and cleaned up. Why can't all companies make it this easy?? I will certainly give you a call again for my tree removal/care needs. Thanks again for being so prompt, direct, and cost effective.

I have had several different companies come out and claim to be arborists. Arborman Tree Care is the ONLY company that has convinced me that they truly know what they are doing. I am a repeat customer and fully intend to call them every 2 years for tree maintenance. They came out this year to prune two trees, remove an elderberry, and prune down five out-of-control bushes that had been neglected by yours truly. Every single person I dealt with (Allison, Joe, Jerome, Jessica and Bill) were very kind and friendly. They really know what they are doing and are worth every penny!

We had a large tree limb fall in our backyard after a major storm and reached out to Arborman Tree Care. Jessica came out the same day and was excellent, she was very professional, knowledgeable, and thorough. She explained the serious condition of the tree (even joked we should buy a lottery ticket because the whole thing could have come down) and provided a clear quote for removing both the damaged maple and a pear tree. She said her crew would follow up quickly, which was reassuring during the storm chaos. Unfortunately, the scheduling and communication after that fell short. We were told the crew would come out on the date we were scheduled but it turned into multiple weeks of delays. Allison was friendly but repeatedly forgot to add us to the schedule (mentioned a sticky note with our name on it) and there were several mix ups, including showing up for the wrong tree at one point and having to stop work due to insufficient crew. We were understanding and flexible, even adjusting our travel plans. On the final scheduled day it rained, which I would have understood why the crew wouldn’t show. I’m sure it’s dangerous to do that in the rain. However, we never received a courtesy call or update. I really had high hopes for this company. Especially, with the great reviews I read and the experience we had with Jessica. Maybe this was just a fluke due to the storm and overwhelming calls. They had every right to tell me “hey can we schedule you out a bit because we’re overwhelmed with calls due to the storm”. Again, it would have been fine with me. I was super understanding the entire time, never got upset or anything. I was just trying to get on the schedule for whenever.

They came during one of those massive wind storms and cut my large maple tree back before it split in 3 places and would do damage to home and gazebo. Thank you
