Structural Pruning
& Tree Weight Reduction in Boise

Improve Tree Structure, Balance Canopy Weight & Protect Your Property

Mature trees can develop overextended branches, uneven canopies, competing stems, and other structural concerns as they grow. Professional structural pruning helps address these conditions through carefully selected pruning cuts that manage excessive weight, improve branch structure, and preserve the tree's natural form.

Arborman Tree Care provides professional structural pruning and tree weight reduction services throughout Boise and the Treasure Valley.

What Is Structural Pruning?

Structural pruning is a specialized form of tree pruning focused on improving the long-term structure, balance, and development of a tree.
Instead of simply removing branches for appearance, structural pruning evaluates how branches and stems are positioned, how weight is distributed throughout the canopy, and where potential structural problems may develop.
Our arborists use selective pruning to address conditions such as excessive end-weight, competing stems, weak or poorly positioned branches, uneven canopy growth, and clearance concerns while maintaining as much healthy canopy as practical.
The goal is not to remove as much of the tree as possible. The goal is to make the right cuts for the tree’s structure, health, location, and long-term needs.

When Does a Tree Need Structural Pruning?

Structural problems often develop gradually as a tree grows. Early professional pruning can help manage developing issues before they become more difficult to address.

Your tree may benefit from structural pruning if you notice:
If you’re unsure whether your tree needs structural pruning, a professional assessment can help determine the appropriate approach.

Why Structural Pruning Matters

Structural pruning is about more than making a tree look neat. When performed appropriately, it can help with several important aspects of long-term tree management.

Better Branch Structure

Selective pruning can help manage competing or poorly positioned branches and support better structural development.

Reduced Excessive Weight

Targeted reduction can help manage excessive end-weight on selected branches.

Improved Canopy Balance

Strategic pruning can address uneven growth and improve the distribution of canopy weight.

Better Property Clearance

Pruning can help maintain appropriate clearance from buildings, driveways, walkways, and other property features.

Long-Term Tree Management

Professional pruning focuses on maintaining the tree's natural architecture instead of unnecessarily removing healthy branches.

Natural Tree Form

Regular assessment allows developing structural concerns to be identified and addressed before they become more difficult to manage.

Our Structural Pruning Services

Tree Weight Reduction

Excessive weight toward the ends of large branches can increase leverage and place additional stress on branch attachments. Our team uses selective reduction pruning to manage appropriate portions of overextended branches while preserving healthy foliage and the tree’s natural shape. The objective is to reduce unnecessary end-weight without excessively removing the canopy.

Canopy Balancing

Uneven canopy growth can cause weight to become concentrated on one side of a tree. Canopy balancing involves carefully selected pruning cuts to improve the distribution of branches and weight throughout the crown. This can be particularly useful for mature trees affected by uneven growth, previous damage, or significant canopy loss.

Structural Correction

Some trees develop multiple dominant stems, crossing branches, weak attachments, or other structural conditions that may require long-term management. We evaluate the tree’s architecture and selectively prune problematic growth to improve its overall structure and, where appropriate, reduce competing growth. For trees with significant structural concerns, additional support systems such as cabling or bracing may also be considered.

Overextended Branch Reduction

Large branches that extend significantly away from the main stem can create additional leverage and may become more vulnerable under certain conditions. Reduction pruning can shorten selected branches while maintaining a natural transition to the remaining canopy. This approach can also help manage branches that have grown toward buildings, driveways, walkways, or other areas where clearance is needed.

Wind Load Management

Trees throughout Boise and the Treasure Valley experience seasonal wind and changing weather conditions. A poorly balanced or excessively dense canopy can respond differently to strong winds than a well-managed structure. Strategic structural pruning can reduce excessive branch weight and address certain canopy conditions while preserving appropriate foliage and the tree’s natural form.

Storm-Damaged Canopy Restoration

Storms can break major limbs or remove significant sections of a tree’s canopy, leaving the remaining structure uneven. After storm damage, selective pruning may help remove damaged branches and restore a more balanced canopy where the tree can safely be retained. If the tree presents an immediate hazard, our team can also evaluate whether emergency tree service, stabilization, or removal is more appropriate.

Our Structural Pruning Process

01

Tree & Site Assessment

We begin by evaluating the tree and surrounding property. Our team considers the tree's size, species, branch structure, canopy distribution, condition, and surrounding risks.

02

Identify Structural Concerns

We look for overextended branches, excessive end-weight, competing stems, weak attachments, damaged branches, clearance issues, and other conditions that may require attention.

03

Develop a Pruning Plan

Based on the assessment, we determine which branches should be reduced, removed, or retained. The goal is to address the identified structural concerns without unnecessary pruning.

04

Perform Selective Pruning

Our team performs targeted pruning cuts designed to manage weight and improve structure while preserving healthy canopy and natural form.

05

Final Canopy Assessment

After pruning, we review the tree's overall structure and canopy to ensure the work has addressed the original objectives and that unnecessary branches have not been removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is structural pruning?

Structural pruning is a specialized tree-pruning method that focuses on the long-term structure and architecture of a tree. It can address excessive branch weight, competing stems, weak or poorly positioned branches, uneven canopy growth, and other structural concerns.
Tree weight reduction involves selectively reducing portions of branches or canopy to manage excessive weight, particularly toward the ends of overextended limbs. The objective is to reduce unnecessary loading while maintaining appropriate healthy foliage.
Proper structural pruning can help manage certain structural concerns and excessive branch weight. However, pruning cannot eliminate every potential tree hazard. A professional assessment is important when a tree has major defects, significant damage, or other safety concerns.
Yes. Selective pruning can help address uneven canopy growth and redistribute weight where appropriate while maintaining the tree’s natural form.
No. Structural pruning uses selective cuts to address specific structural objectives. Tree topping removes large portions of a tree’s canopy and can create long-term structural and health problems.
There is no universal schedule. Pruning frequency depends on the tree species, age, growth rate, structural condition, location, and previous pruning history. A professional assessment can help determine an appropriate maintenance approach.
Depending on the extent of the damage, selective pruning may help remove damaged branches and restore a more balanced canopy. Severely damaged or hazardous trees may require stabilization, emergency service, or removal instead.
Yes. Arborman Tree Care provides structural pruning and tree-care services throughout Boise and surrounding Treasure Valley communities.

They trimmed and cleaned up 2 large Ash trees in my backyard. They managed to get the lift through the gate and to both trees without damaging my fence or lawn. They cleaned up the debris. Very professional and knowledgeable!

Had a 10 year old plum tree at a rental property that needed to go due to disease. They came, quoted fair price, said there was a crew in the area and they could get to it later today. Job done. Cut nicely to the ground. Treated stump and cleaned up. Why can't all companies make it this easy?? I will certainly give you a call again for my tree removal/care needs. Thanks again for being so prompt, direct, and cost effective.

I have had several different companies come out and claim to be arborists. Arborman Tree Care is the ONLY company that has convinced me that they truly know what they are doing. I am a repeat customer and fully intend to call them every 2 years for tree maintenance. They came out this year to prune two trees, remove an elderberry, and prune down five out-of-control bushes that had been neglected by yours truly. Every single person I dealt with (Allison, Joe, Jerome, Jessica and Bill) were very kind and friendly. They really know what they are doing and are worth every penny!

We had a large tree limb fall in our backyard after a major storm and reached out to Arborman Tree Care. Jessica came out the same day and was excellent, she was very professional, knowledgeable, and thorough. She explained the serious condition of the tree (even joked we should buy a lottery ticket because the whole thing could have come down) and provided a clear quote for removing both the damaged maple and a pear tree. She said her crew would follow up quickly, which was reassuring during the storm chaos. Unfortunately, the scheduling and communication after that fell short. We were told the crew would come out on the date we were scheduled but it turned into multiple weeks of delays. Allison was friendly but repeatedly forgot to add us to the schedule (mentioned a sticky note with our name on it) and there were several mix ups, including showing up for the wrong tree at one point and having to stop work due to insufficient crew. We were understanding and flexible, even adjusting our travel plans. On the final scheduled day it rained, which I would have understood why the crew wouldn’t show. I’m sure it’s dangerous to do that in the rain. However, we never received a courtesy call or update. I really had high hopes for this company. Especially, with the great reviews I read and the experience we had with Jessica. Maybe this was just a fluke due to the storm and overwhelming calls. They had every right to tell me “hey can we schedule you out a bit because we’re overwhelmed with calls due to the storm”. Again, it would have been fine with me. I was super understanding the entire time, never got upset or anything. I was just trying to get on the schedule for whenever.

They came during one of those massive wind storms and cut my large maple tree back before it split in 3 places and would do damage to home and gazebo. Thank you
